We began our YAM journey as 14 quiet, yet eager individuals. Pumped full of coffee, we nervously filled the room and took our seats in the ‘U’ formation.
We were a group with an array of experiences and backgrounds, from three different sectors, all with one common goal – to be YAMin’!
Over the course of the five days, with the assistance of three of the best Trainers we could ask for, we graduated (presumably with honours) as the newest additions to the YAM Instructors family.
We were thrown out of our comfort zone and had to time travel back to our 15-year-old selves. This was daunting, yet hilarious as we acted as our younger selves and channelled some of the young people we work with to get into character.
Everything we did was hands-on and relevant to what we will be doing out in the ‘real world’. We did exercises, role plays, and watched the expert Trainers deliver YAM to us. In every moment we challenged our thoughts and pre-conceived ideas, and had some of the best professional discussions that I’ve ever been a part of.
At the end of the week, we were able to step out of our learner role and step up as Instructors. Having this opportunity to present was invaluable. While we got some excellent feedback from the Trainers and our peers, it was the overwhelming support we gave each other that solidified our new-found family.
I can’t wait to be YAMin’ with you all!
